Frequently Asked Questions

Why use Wedding Republic?
Wedding Republic allows couples to create an online registry that is unique to them. With their registry, couples can show you exactly what they need to start their future together while providing an easy and convenient way to give. Everything included in the registry was chosen by the couple and has been customized to reflect their personalities, hopes, and dreams for their future.

How does a Wedding Republic Registry work?

Wedding Republic allows you to create a registry that is uniquely yours.

Once you’ve created your free account, the first step is to enter your basic wedding information. Then you can start adding your gifts to the wish list! You can browse our list of suggestions or add your own. The image, price, and description displayed for the gifts are totally customizable.

Remember, since it’s a cash wedding registry, you’re basically creating a wish list – anything goes from a couch to your honeymoon – even your favourite wine! It’s the perfect way to show friends and family what you really want, and provide them with a meaningful, easy and fun way to give cash.

Once you’re happy with your wedding registry, you can publish it and invite people to check it out through the custom link you’ve created. Friends and family can then see exactly what you really want.

How much does it cost?

While the service is completely free for the couple, there is a 5.5% transaction fee for the guests. For example, if guests purchase a gift or Puzzle Piece worth $100, they would pay an additional $5.50 for the service.

Will my guests like this?

The convenience of being able to purchase online, coupled with the satisfaction of knowing they’re contributing toward something you actually want and will use makes Wedding Republic a hit with guests. From the Puzzle Piece feature to printed gift certificates to include in the card, we’ve made the experience fun and friendly for your guests. After all, your family and friends are important to you. So they’re important to us too.

How secure is Wedding Republic?

Security is our first priority. Wedding Republic uses 256-bit SSL (secure socket layer) certification to provide encryption between your web browser and our web server so that personal information can be transmitted over the Internet securely.

Here’s how you can tell if a transaction is being transmitted in a secure fashion:

  • The URL area turns green.
  • A lock symbol appears in the URL line.
  • The address begins with “https”
How secure is your online payment processing for our guests?

For Canadian registries, Wedding Republic uses Moneris Solutions, a PCI compliant, integrated payment gateway to process all transactions (also used by major brands such as MacDonald’s, Indigo and others).

This means that all payments are conducted securely and the system for processing and transmitting cardholder data is compliant with PCI DSS and the Card Associate Compliance program.

For registries based in the United States, Wedding Republic uses WePay, a payment processing system designed specifically for website applications and technology platforms which is also PCI compliant. It provides an alternative to PayPal, which allows WR users to withdraw their funds at any time through WePay's secure payment gateway. Learn more about WePay here

WePay will be available to Canadian couples by summer of 2014.

Where is the money held?

Canadian Registries: While your registry is open and guests are making their contributions, WR holds your money in a non-interest-bearing trust account. Once your registry is closed and you initiate the payment process, the money is transferred to you using your method of choice.

US Registries: As soon as a payment is made, the funds are transferred to your WePay account where you can withdraw them at any time. Learn more about WePay here.

How do we collect our funds?

Canadian Registries: For maximum ease and security, Wedding Republic transfers all funds via direct deposit.

When you first set up your account, you’ll be asked to choose a closing date. This is the last day guests can make a purchase. Although you can close your registry anytime after the wedding, we recommend keeping it open for at least a few days after the wedding for those procrastinators. ;-)

Anytime after the wedding you can log into the COLLECT section of your registry and enter your contact information including the account holder, address and banking information.

Once everything is entered, you’ll be able to click on the COLLECT button at the bottom of the page. This button will only appear after your closing date.

After you’ve clicked COLLECT, we’ll contact you to verify your information and issue you your funds. You can learn more about collecting your funds here.

Want to extend your registry close date? No problem! Just send an email to info@weddingrepublic.com and we'll be happy to take care of this for you!

Please note that you will receive two emails during the collection process. The first will be to verify your payment information and the second will be to confirm that your payment has been sent. From the day you receive the second email confirmation, your transfer can take anywhere from 5 to 7 business days.

US Registries: Funds can be collected anytime through your WePay account. If you have any questions, or are unable to connect your account, please email info@weddingrepublic.com, we'd be happy to help! Learn more about WePay here.

What are the Puzzle Pieces for?

The Puzzle Piece feature lets you register for something really big - and more expensive - like a trip or big screen TV. Once you pick your really big gift, you can split it up into a puzzle so guests can buy smaller, more affordable pieces of the puzzle.

Do all the Puzzle Pieces have to be purchase in order to receive the gift?

Nope! Wedding Republic is a cash wedding registry, so you’ll still receive the funds that have been contributed even if only one Puzzle Piece was purchased.

Once you close your registry, you receive your funds you can you can use them as you see fit. It’s a “no regrets” wedding registry, so if you’ve changed your mind about some of the gifts you posted, you have the ultimate flexibility to change it up a little!

How much should we register for?

The average purchase is around $150 per guest. So, if you’re inviting 100 people to your wedding, the total value of your registry should be around $15,000.

How much do guests usually spend on wedding gifts?

While the average is $150 per guest, you should still vary the options for those who want to give more and those who can only afford a modest amount. Many couples start with a base amount of $25, and include additional items ranging from $50 to $150.

Check out this article for more info on how much to include on your WR registry.

How do we decide what to add to our registry?

This ball is completely in your court, since you can add anything you need or want. But here are a few tips and hints you might find useful in getting started:

What do you already have? This seems like a no-brainer, but take stock of what you already own. Between you and your fiancé, it’s possible you already have a lot of “traditional” registry items (such as a toaster, cutlery and tea towels), and even a few duplicates.

What do you need? After taking stock, decide what you really need. Is it a toaster? Cutlery? Or is it time to upgrade your big screen TV? But be honest with yourself – and don’t necessarily believe the person that hands you a scanner at the store. Will you really ever use that crystal punch bowl? If the answer is yes, then register for it! But the point is, put some thought into what you’re going to need and use. And don’t forget…this is a team activity. Both the bride and groom need a say when it comes to picking wedding gifts. And it just might help start the marriage of on the right track. ;-)

What do you want? When we say think about what you REALLY want, we’re not just talking about your wedding registry. Because it’s not just about the gifts. Creating your WR wedding registry is an opportunity for you and your significant other to sit down and daydream a little. What do you want your future to look like? And what do you need to make it happen?

Check out the Gift Ideas section of our blog for more gift ideas.

What happens once a gift has been purchased?

The gift will appear as “sold out” in order to show that it’s been purchased, but will still be visible on your registry.

What happens once all of my gifts have been purchased?

We recommend you keep an eye on your registry as people begin to make purchases. For a guest, it would be awful to go to a registry and find it’s been completely purchased! Once 90% of the gifts you have registered for have been purchased, we’ll send you an email to let you know!

How do we tell people about our registry once it’s done?

Once you’ve created and published your WR registry, you can invite your friends and family to check it out through email or Facebook. We also recommend that you put the registry link on your wedding website (and make sure you have a wedding website). You should also include it in your bridal shower invitations.

In the name of practicality, some couples also include the registry information in their wedding invitations, but the etiquette experts sometimes frown on this. Our opinion? It’s your call.

Here’s a little more information that might help.

How do I know what my guests have bought?

Every time a purchase is made, we’ll send you a notice so you know to log in and check the purchase-tracking page. You’ll be able to see exactly who made the purchase, how much they contributed, and the personal message they left for you. You’ll also be able to export this list so writing thank-you cards after the wedding will take a little less time.

Can I make changes to my registry?

Of course! You can log in and modify your information, change the wedding date, change your photo and welcome message, add to your guest list, and update your gift list anytime. The only thing you aren’t able to change is your custom link (for example: weddingrepublic.com/BobandSue), which directs people to your registry.

Can we collect our funds before the closing date?

Absolutely! Just as long as it’s after the wedding date. Log in, make sure your contact and banking information is up to date. When you’re ready, click the COLLECT button to start the process. But please note that if your registry also closes when the funds are Collected so you will be overriding the original close date and your registry will become inactive.

Most gifts are purchased the day before, day of and day after the wedding. But if you're worried that there may still be a few stragglers, we suggest leaving it open for a few extra days.

*Note that, for US registries, couples can collect their funds at anytime prior to or after the wedding date.

What should I do if the wedding is cancelled?

If your wedding is cancelled, just give us a heads-up and we’ll close your account. If any purchases were made, we’ll verify your payment information and send the funds to you. Unfortunately, we cannot facilitate refunds for your guests, so that responsibility will fall to you.

How do I find a registry?

You can find your couple’s registry with the Search section of Wedding Republic. You can search using one of the couple’s last names or with their custom link.

How much should I contribute?

This is completely up to you and may depend on several things. Are you particularly close with the couple? Did you travel to attend the wedding? If so, often times an expensive gift is not expected.

A good general rule of thumb is to contribute enough to cover your place at the wedding. But at the end of the day, give what you can afford. The couple knows that your gift is coming straight from the heart!

How much is the service fee and what is it for?

The service fee is 5.5% of your total contribution. This fee is almost always less than the cost of shipping, handling, and wrapping of a traditional gift. Depending on your country of origin, the fee may be subject to taxes. The fee covers the administrative and development costs associated with maintaining the couple’s wedding registry. There is a lot happening at Wedding Republic headquarters to ensure the couples and guests are both receiving the best possible experience!

What’s a Puzzle Piece?

When you visit the couple’s Wedding Republic registry, you might notice that some of the gifts are broken up into puzzles. This way, you can contribute toward a more expensive gift without blowing your budget.

Why wouldn't we just give the couple money at their wedding?

Giving the couple a gift through Wedding Republic is a way to simplify the already hectic lives of an engaged couple. Using the registry means they won’t have to stress about monitoring or counting cash at the wedding or worry about your contribution being stolen.

Wedding Republic lets you see what the couple really wants and choose what the money will go towards. This helps make the gift more meaningful both for you and for the couple. For you, contributing online is easy and convenient.

What happens if the wedding is cancelled?

If the wedding is cancelled, the couple will close the registry early and withdraw the funds. Wedding Republic does not facilitate refunds. As is the case with most wedding registries, the couple is responsible for addressing guests’ requests for refunds.

When should I make my purchase?

You can make your purchase anytime up until the registry close date (available on the registry page). However, we recommend you make your contribution in the month leading up to or on the wedding day.

How do I select a gift?

It’s easy. Just click on an image and you’ll see a pop-up box. You can choose to buy the gift (or any number of puzzle pieces) and add it to your cart. When you’re ready to finalize your purchase, simply click the Checkout button and follow the steps.

How will they know I’ve made my purchase?

After you’ve picked a gift, you can add a best wishes note to be sent to the couple. You can keep it a surprise until the wedding day or send the note immediately. Upon closing the registry, the couple will also receive a complete list of guests and purchases.

Is there something I can include in the card?

Yes, definitely. After you complete your purchase, you’ll be able to print a gift certificate with the details that you can include in your card.

How do I make a payment?

Once you’re ready to finalize your purchase, simply fill in the required information, and you’ll be directed to a secure payment gateway. All major credit cards – including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express – are accepted. Payment is safe and secure. WeddingRepublic.com uses 256-bit SSL certification to provide encryption between your web browser and our web server so that personal information can be transmitted over the Internet securely. You can feel confident that your financial transaction will be conducted in a safe and secure manner.

What kinds of payment do you accept?

All major credit cards – including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express – are accepted.

Will I receive a confirmation of my purchase?

Once you have completed your purchase, we’ll email you a receipt for your records.

Do I have to create an account to browse the registry?

No. You’re welcome to peruse the registry at your leisure, and we only ask for basic information if you do choose to make a purchase. Your personal information will not be shared with anyone other than the couple.

Does the couple receive the funds immediately?

Once your purchase has been processed, your contribution is held in a secure, non-interest-bearing account on behalf of the couple. Once they’ve closed the registry, they’ll be able to collect the funds contributed by you and other guests.

Do you store my credit card information?

No, we do not. While this means you will be required to re-enter your information if you wish to make another purchase, we believe those few extra moments are worth your piece of mind.
